About

Every other day in Florida, a baby dies from suffocation while sleeping unsafely. It only takes one time for a baby to sleep in an unsafe place or position to be deadly and 100% of these deaths were preventable. That’s why the Juvenile Welfare Board of Pinellas County (JWB) launched the Sleep Baby Safely campaign in 2018, alongside a concerned group of safe sleep champions.

The campaign features data-driven facts, consistent messages, coordinated materials, and live-saving tips everyone should know and share. One key fact is that the cause of these deaths is suffocation – not SIDS. Leading experts across the State of Florida agree. Knowing the cause of death means we can prevent it.

Today, the campaign has expanded to 18 Florida counties whose champions are working tirelessly to protect babies from sleep-related suffocation by sharing a consistent message and coordinated materials. We’re calling on all Florida citizens to join us. Together, let’s give all babies the chance to celebrate their first birthdays!

SAFE SLEEP ABCs:
ALONE, BACK, CRIB

Always put babies to sleep alone on their back in an empty crib with only a firm mattress and tight-fitting sheet.

SHARE A ROOM,
NOT A BED

Bring baby’s crib into parent’s room, and never lay baby to sleep on a soft surface like an adult bed, couch or air mattress.
Alarm clock.

STAY ALERT WHILE
FEEDING BABY

Set an alarm and always return baby to crib after feeding. Breastfeed, if possible – it’s best for baby.
